The boutique property is a fantastic destination for eco-friendly jamaica holidays and it has now been awarded one of the most sought-after certifications in the tourism and hospitality industry.

Hospitality Assured is a certification programme that is owned by the Institute of Hospitality in the United Kingdom and promotes service and business excellence in companies within the tourism and hospitality sector such as hotels, resorts, airports, healthcare and educational organisations.

Hotel Mockingbird Hill also recently received acclamation in the Caribbean Tourism Organisation’s Excellence in Sustainable Award contest.

The director of human resources for The Caribbean Tourism Organisation, which oversees the HA programme in the Caribbean, Bonita Morgan, stated: “I am heartened that businesses like Hotel Mocking Bird Hill are realising the tremendous benefits to be derived from Hospitality Assured certification. We look forward to many more Caribbean tourism businesses taking advantage of the programme to help improve service quality and increase customer loyalty.”

Barbara Walker, the co-owner of Hotel Mockingbird Hill, explained how the training programme helped the team realise what was holding them back and it forced them to break down the process of achieving their goals into smaller achievable steps.

“If our review process led us to the conclusion that some procedures needed modification, these were arrived at through group discussion and consensus,” Ms. Walker commented. “It is a long and ongoing process and it helps when one has a team that enjoys good relations amongst themselves and can openly engage in the dialogue to evaluate guests comments, engage in a positive and critical analysis and come up with ideas for improvements.”

The $ 65 million Amber Cove Cruise Centre is the Caribbean’s newest cruise destination and in 2014 it will be open to cruise ships and travellers going on dominican republic holidays

The cruise centre’s position in the Bay of Maimon near Puerto Plata will help re-establish the nation’s northern coast as a destination for cruise holidays as it has not had any cruise arrivals in over 30 years.

The groundbreaking ceremonies took place on 15th May, 2012 and were attended by Dominican Republic's President Dr. Leonel Fernandez Reyna, the Minister of Tourism, Francisco Javier Garcia, the Minister of Public Works & Communications Victor Diaz Rua, the Minister of Environment and Natural Resources, Ernesto Reyna and many more cruise and tourism industry leaders and VIPs.

Cuba ranks 3rd as a top holiday destination in the Caribbean

Cuba ranks 3rd as a top holiday destination in the Caribbean

The general director of the World Tourism Organization (WTO) for the Americas, Carlos Vogeler, recently revealed that Cuba is now in third position as the Caribbean holiday destination that welcomes more tourists per year, trailing behind the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico.

The rising popularity of cuba holidays among worldwide travellers heading to the Caribbean was revealed during Mr Vogeler’s visit to Jardines del Rey as part of a special tour he enjoyed after the end of the 32nd edition of Cuba’s annual tourism fair FITCUBA 2012. The official also added that Cuba is currently improving its tourist industry to provide visitors with enhanced holiday experiences, and that shed in the increasing number of tourists arriving to the island each year.

Those now seeking to enjoy holidays in cuba have a larger number of hotels to choose from, a wider range of tourist attractions to enjoy and enhanced quality standards at most resorts, hostels, inns and boutique hotels. In addition further  investment projects in attractions such as golf courses and marina as well as the opening of new hotel rooms are already in the pipeline.

At the same pace Cuba's tourism industry has improved and evolved so have the tourism fairs organised in the island. The idea to take it this year to such an attractive place as Cayo Santa Maria was simply brilliant, according to Vogeler.

Mr Vogeler added that a visit to the pristine Jardines de La Reina archipelago (which Cayo Santa Maria is part of) allowed many foreigners to get to know the natural beauties that one can only find in these keys, (including the Cayo Coco and Cayo Guillermo keys), because they are a very valuable tourism product barely known outside Cuba.

Travel agents, tour operators, hotel chains and airline representatives toured the different facilities in the above-mentioned keys located off the northern central Cuban coast. There they were able to admire the beauty of the Playa Pilar resort, one of the most beautiful places in Cuba, where the sand dunes are among the best preserved in the region.

Antigua Hotels Record Highest Occupancy Levels in Three Years

Antigua Hotels Record Highest Occupancy Levels in Three Years

The Chief Executive Officer of the Antigua and Barbuda Hotels and Tourist Association, Neil Forrester, has released new data showing the best hotel occupancy levels on the Caribbean island of Antigua since 2008.

According to the figures, there has been a recent increase in the number of tourists going on antigua holidays with hotel occupancies in the island reaching an average of 63.8 per cent during the month of April this year.

In April 2008, the occupancy levels of Antigua hotels reached an average of 72.4 per cent but visitor numbers to the island dropped during the recession between 2008 and 2011.

John Maginley, the Minister of Tourism said that the rise in travellers taking holidays in antigua and staying in the nation’s hotels and resorts was due to the joint marketing efforts from the Tourism Authority and the Antigua and Barbuda Hotels and Tourist Association.

“Visibility and proper placement in today’s ever competitive global tourism market are the key essential elements in ensuring that rooms are filled year round,” he stated.

The twin-island nation of Antigua and Barbuda lies between the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean and is famous for its wide selection of beautiful pristine white sand beaches; with enough of them to go to a different one every day of the year.

The islands boast natural scenery that is typical of the Caribbean including white and pink sandy, palm-fringed beaches; warm turquoise ocean waters; and lush forests and green landscapes.

Barbuda is the smaller of the two islands and holidaymakers can enjoy birdwatching at the Frigate Bird Sanctuary in the Codrington Lagoon. The island is less built-up than Antigua and has a selection of luxury beachfront Caribbean hotels and resorts.

Antigua is the main and larger island and is a popular destination for romantic weddings and honeymoons, family caribbean holidays and annual sailing regattas.

The Caribbean nation was voted the “Sexiest Destination” by Caribbean Travel and Life Magazine earlier this year and the islands were voted among the top 10 honeymoon destinations in the Caribbean by BRIDES Magazine in 2011.

During holidays to antigua tourists can enjoy a wide choice of activities such as sailing, kayaking, scuba diving, snorkelling, yacht charters, hiking, tours of nature parks, and shopping in local markets and high end boutiques.

Increase in the number of travellers who took Dominican Republic holidays in first quarter of 2012

Francisco Javier Garcia, the Dominican Republic’s minister of tourism proudly reported a 7.8 per cent increase in the number of travellers arriving for their dominican republic holidays through the local airports in the first quarter of 2012. Of the first three months of the year March saw the most significant uplift in arrival figures with a nine per cent increase as a result of 39,471 more visitors to the nation than in March 2011.

Mr Garcia noted, “The main reasons visits continue to increase are the country's magnificent, unspoiled nature, year-round sunny and warm climate, beautiful beaches, golf courses, world-class hotels, thriving culture and gastronomy. Visitors from around the world also say that their favourite aspect of the destination is how well friendly Dominicans treat them"

The announcement was made at the Dominican Annual Tourism Exchange (DATE 2012) event which was held at the Hotel Barceló Punta Cana Convention Centre. Undoubtedly, the announced growth in the number of visitors booking Dominican Republic holidays during the first quarter of the year would have served to boost confidence in the island as a leading travel destination and has certainly raised the bar for the remaining months of 2012.

Sandals Negril Beach Resort and Spa and Sandals Grande Riviera in Jamaica have both been awarded Platinum level certification by EarthCheck.

The two resorts pride themselves on providing luxury jamaica holidays for travellers while demonstrating high standards of environmental and community care.

Both Jamaica hotels achieved the highest level of EarthCheck Certification and Sandals Resorts has become the first hotel company in the world to ever receive two prestigious platinum certifications.

“This achievement highlights the long term commitment that Sandals Resorts has shown to the communities and environment of the Caribbean,” stated Stewart Moore, the Chief Executive of EarthCheck.

“They’re well ahead of most governments and industry players globally as a result of their efforts, and serve as a leader in the field of sustainable practices.”

This is the second Platinum EarthCheck Certification for Sandals Negril after it earned its first in 2008 and it is the first award for Sandals Grande Riviera, which recently underwent a $ 60 million refurbishment.

When enjoying holidays in jamaica at the resort, guests can relax within a lush, romantic setting in the newest and most luxurious suites, The Riviera Villas. The private villas feature glass and mosaic tiling and beautiful landscaped gardens for couples enjoying a romantic jamaica holiday or honeymoon and large private villas are available with shared swimming pools and refurbished pool areas for tourists holidaying with friends or family.

The Sandals Negril on the other hand, is surrounded by lush tropical garden and the famous white sand Seven Mile Beach. The resort has luxury swim-up suites, butler service, and gourmet restaurants.

In July last year, Sandals Resorts International launched a new environmental management programme called Sandals Earthguard which is powered by EarthCheck.

Sandals Earthguard includes staff awareness and training on environmental policies; waste management programmes; monitoring the use of water throughout the resorts; using timers on electrical equipment such as outdoor lighting, Jacuzzi blowers, and refrigeration appliances in kitchens; and the promotion of local green tours and attractions.

Adam Stewart, the chief executive of Sandal Resorts International, explained: “Sandals Earthguard allows us to take practical, meaningful action to provide quality holiday experiences for our guests, while we work to minimise the environmental and social impacts of our operations.

He added: “This is an incredible achievement for our company and we look forward to continuing to expand our environmental efforts for years to come.”

The resort has now reaped what is sowed by having their Green Globe Certification reinstated.

As more tourists took Cuba holidays this past winter the island experienced best high season ever

As more tourists took Cuba holidays this past winter the island experienced best high season ever

It has been revealed by official government sources that as many as 1.73 million visitors arrived to Cuba between December 2011 and April 2012, marking an unprecedented record for the nation’s high tourist season.

Of the 1.73 million tourists who enjoyed cuba holidays this past winter season, 1.24 were foreign tourists, representing a growth of 5.3 per cent compared to the 2011 figures for the same period.

The statics were recently unveiled by Manuel Marrero, Cuba’s Tourism Minister, during a speech at the 32nd International Tourism Fair, FITCUBA 2012.

Mr Marrero added that this growth showed the growing preference for Cuba holidays among holidaymakers as the island gained popularity as a top destination in the Caribbean region. He also attributed the island’s recent tourism success to its natural attractions, unique history and intrinsic beauty.

Old Havana- Cuba

During his speech he also reported that traditional tourism source markets like Canada and France, growing at a rate of 3 per cent and 9.6 per cent respectively, showed steady growth, while new markets like Argentina, the country that this year’s FITCUBA fair was dedicated to, doubled its figures of visitors. Other new markets showing marked increases in visitor numbers included Russia, Venezuela, Brazil, Holland, Colombia and Mexico.

The only countries reported to have seen a decrease in the number of tourists going on holidays to cuba were the United Kingdom, Spain and Italy. Marrero linked the decreasing trends in these major tourism markets to the impact the global economic crisis had on these countries.

Marrero was also proud to point out that Cuba continues to work hard to increase the quality of the holiday experience they offer to discerning travellers while also trying to diversify the island’s tourism industry.

To this end he said that five new cuba hotels had been opened in 2011, providing an additional 1537 rooms while over 6639 guest rooms at various hotels in cuba underwent major refurbishment works to raise the standards of quality and comfort offered.

At present Cuba accommodates travellers at a total of 58,626 rooms, of which, 63 per cent are in four and five-star hotels (with 71 per cent of these located in beach resorts), 23 per cent cater to city tourism (mainly in cities like Havana, Trinidad, Santiago de Cuba and Cienfuegos) and 2 per cent to nature tourism and eco-friendly holidays.

On this note Marrero also added that the Tourism Ministry in the island also bought 315 new buses and 3652 new cars for tourists to rent, making it easier for holidaymakers to get around during their holidays in cuba

Marrero finished by saying that Cuba is now in the process of carrying out a massive investment plan that will see not only the addition of new hotel rooms, mostly in four and five-star hotels, but also the remodelling of some hotels in Cuba that need to increase the standard of quality they offer to visitors.

In the pipeline further new tourist attractions are planned, with several investment projects such as the construction of new golf courses, marinas, airports and an improved road network and transport facilities for tourists.

This marks the start of an ambitious new project that will see the addition of another 45,837 hotel rooms all along Cuba’s northern coast by 2030.

Tourism Minister announces more Cuba hotels to be built on keys and islets during FITUR Fair

Tourism Minister announces more Cuba hotels to be built on keys and islets during FITUR Fair

During the 32nd edition of the International FITUR tourism fair, tourism officials unveiled plans for new offshore cuba hotels to be built on the island’s keys and islets. The move was announced by industry leaders who explained that such plans were put in place to make the most of the tourism boom Cuba is currently experiencing.

With cuba holidays having gained increasing popularity over the last few years as more tourists than ever arrive to the island, the country’s tourism sector is gearing up to welcome more visitors than ever, especially now that Americans are no allowed to go on holidays to cuba for the first time in over 50 years thanks to the creation of People to People licenses introduced by the Obama administration. This sudden surge in American travellers going to Cuba has also pushed the need for more hotels in cuba to accommodate the growing number of arrivals.

As of now, the offshore destination that has seen the more recent development is Cayo Santa Maria, a beautiful pristine key off Cuba’s northern central coast in the province of Villa Clara. This tourist resort offers visitors with idyllic sun and beach holidays in cuba and was also the venue selected to host this year’s FITUR fair.

During the event, Cuba’s Tourism Minister Manuel Marrero placed strong emphasis on the economic importance for the country to further develop Cuba’s offshore keys and islets in order to attract more tourists and provide a wider selection of accommodation options.

According to the minister the plan is to build 45,000 hotel rooms by 2030 on the keys adjacent to the mainland’s north-central region, east to the province of Camaguey.

At present, Cayo Santa Maria, a popular beach resort and islet, located some 340 kilometres (211 miles) east of Havana, has some 6,000 hotel rooms operated by chains like Spain's Melia and Barcelo, as revealed by the commercial director of the Tourism Ministry, Jose Manuel Bisbe, and cited by local media.

Don Robinson, CEO of the eagerly anticipated Paradise Island Baha Mar “mega resort” has noted that the Bahamas needs to see a significant increase in the number of travellers booking Bahamas flights by the time the resort launches in 2014 in order for the wider tourism industry to thrive.

While the figures for cruise ship arrivals to the Bahamas have been consistently strong with Tourism Director General David Johnson recently describing the cruise industry as “stronger than ever and showing no signs of slowing down anytime soon”, airlift has shown signs of weakness with a decline of over 2 per cent in 2011 when compared to 2010. As a result, Mr Robinson in conjunction with George Markantonis, managing director of The Atlantis- one of the top Bahamas hotels- has launched an offensive campaign to promote bahamas holidays “We need about 400,000 more seats in the market per year. That's a 30 percent increase roughly in airlift, which is why we need to start early”.

Executives of the Baha Mar and Atlantis have recognised that there is strength in unity and have put competition aside noting the importance of working together to showcase all the exciting and beautiful things that holidays in the Bahamas have to offer, “We are aggressively becoming a world-class destination... Atlantis and Baha Mar can co-exist. What Atlantis delivers and what we deliver are different enough. There is a fair amount of growth that needs to happen so we are all satisfied with the rates and occupancy”.

In order to achieve the 30 per cent increase needed in air arrivals the executives of these luxury Bahamas hotels have committed to pitching to all the major airlines over the course of the year including U.S. based Delta Airlines. Mr Robinson has even indicated that recent meetings with Air China on the prospect of a direct flight to the Bahamas from China have proven to be encouraging.

If the luxurious beachfront property, boasting four new hotels including a Grand Hyatt, an eco-friendly water park and a Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course does not win over airlines the jaw dropping 9000 square foot casino at the Baha Mar which promises to be the largest and most lavish in the Caribbean is sure to be a deciding factor in attracting travellers to book Bahamas holidays.
